Postpartum Stuff

-First off, after having a baby your body feels like a wet noodle, that is the only way to describe it. I felt wobbly because my muscles were so stretched out! It is the weirdest feeling. I can do crunches but I tried doing some sit ups and it was nearly impossible.

-You still look pregnant after you give birth. I would say, after looking back at pictures, that after giving birth I still looked like I was 23 weeks along. Even after 6 weeks I think I have a permanent pooch, unless Shaun T can fix that for me (more on that later)

-Those first few weeks home are brutal, whether you gave birth or adopted, just having a newborn baby in your home you are in the trenches. I felt like I had no idea what I was doing at times and then other times I felt like a real mom. And then sometimes I felt like a real life zombie.

-At first I didn't even know how to do housework anymore, that took a while to work that back into my routine (Shout out to Cory's wonderful family that have come over and helped us with yard work quite a few times!! I have the best in laws ever!! And my wonderful mom who made sure we all had clean clothes to wear!)

-I knew I would have to get up to feed Adalyn several times a night, but the first few weeks I did not know that she would stay awake for like 2 hours!  In the middle of the night! And she did that again last night after sleeping 5-6 hour stretches for the past couple weeks. I can just imagine her tiny little face looking up at me with these huge eyes shining in the dark, content as can be, but unwilling to sleep. Ha ha ha she is cute.

-I don't want everything to seem like it is sunshine and roses all day long,  having a child is such a huge adjustment. I had no idea what we were getting ourselves into. It is so, so hard, and at first it isn't even very rewarding because your baby can't smile yet. The only way she can communicate is by crying.  So you feel like you make your baby cry all the time. But after that first smile you don't look back. And actually the cuddles are rewarding, if you have a cuddly baby.

-In the post about Adalyn's birth story I said that she was so good at nursing and latched on right away, which is true! But I didn't tell the whole truth, because I couldn't quite talk about it yet . .

disclaimer: to some this might sound petty and unimportant, but these are the struggles that I went through that were hard for me, I know a lot of people go through so so much more during pregnancy or when trying to become pregnant and I admire those women more than I can even say.

So, like I said Adalyn was really good at nursing right from the get-go. I had the lactation consultant teach me a few different ways to hold her, and we were set! The only problems we ever had were if I waited to long to feed her, she would get so upset that it would take her a while to calm down and latch on. The second and third night we were home were horrible. Adalyn ended up having pretty bad jaundice and had to be put on 2 billi lights, so she was attached to this glow worm machine and she screamed and wailed most of the night. At one point Cory and I laid her in her crib and just stared at her while she screamed (only for a minute or so)because we had no idea what to do. I would feed her and she would go to sleep for maybe 10-20 minutes and want to start eating again.  During the day when she was awake, she was always cranky, always.  The third night I had the thought 'well maybe I should give her some formula' but I immediately dismissed the thought because I would be failing if I gave in and gave her formula. I realize now that that was a selfish and I was only thinking about myself or what other people would think about me. The next day I called my cousin Natalee who is also Adalyn's cute nurse at the pediatricians office and I explained everything that was going on. I told her my milk still hadn't come in and it had been 4 days. She told me to nurse Adalyn first and then supplement with a little bit of formula. I guess it is pretty common for milk to not come in until 5 days after.

As soon as we gave Adalyn one ounce of formula she was a completely different baby. She was the sweet baby I had in the hospital! So we continued this routine for the next few days, and my milk still hadn't come in. So I called my Dr, I went to the hospital and talked to the nurses there, I called a lactation specialist who told me "Well this never happens, I have never had anyone go more than 8 days without their milk coming in, it always comes in." Which made me feel horrible! I was trying everything I could and nothing was working. I got on herbal supplements, I started nursing, bottle feeding and then watching an entire episode of Parenthood while pumping (it is NOT fun to pump for 40 minutes) and then getting maybe 1/2 an ounce. It was so frustrating, especially with still recovering from having her and I was constantly in tears about it.

By day 14 I think  Cory and I had mostly decided to switch to just formula, which was so hard for me to accept. I felt like less of a woman, and less of a mother because I couldn't feed my baby! I know that sounds ridiculous but that is truly how I felt. I was angry that my breasts weren't working!! (sorry for the language ha ha). They have one function and one purpose and they weren't working!! I nursed her a few more times, mostly because I am dramatic and couldn't let go.

I think the reason I was so sad about it was because I loved nursing Adalyn and she was so good at it and I felt like I was wasting a talent! Plus, for me nursing was very special, it was time for me to bond with my baby. And even though I might be tearing up as I write this, I have found that bottle feeding her is just the same. I can still look into her eyes and talk to her or sing to her and I feel like I am having the same experience as I would have nursing. It just took me a while to realize that. It is also fun that Cory can feed her, or the other day my dad did and I think that was special for him. And really, the most important thing is that she is growing and developing normally. She is gaining weight just like she should and she is happy and so loved. Except right when I typed the word happy she let out a cry, ha ha. We add a probiotic to her formula once a day which helps her digest better and I am really happy with the results we are getting from using formula.

I really wanted to find out why my milk never came in, but I have come to learn that it happens to quite a few   women, either with all their kids or just one.  My grandma and great grandma went through the same thing, and hearing things like that makes me feel better, I am still getting over feeling like a failure, even though I know there was nothing I could do about it. I think as women we all struggle with feeling like a failure at something at one time or another (if it has to do with motherhood at least)

So anyways, that's my story and I feel so blessed that that is the only struggle I've had. It just totally blindsided me and it was something I never thought would happen. But I have learned a great lesson that I'm sure I needed ( I need to learn a lot of lessons)  and there are great things about bottle feeding that I love, mostly that Cory can get up with her sometimes, haha!

-Anyways, onto a lighter note. I am saying this on my blog so I will be more accountable. I had my 6 week check up and everything is going pretty well, so CORY AND I STARTED INSANITY. Now we have to stick with it. We did the fit test and the first day of plyometric/cardio and we both almost died. Especially me since my ab muscles are non existent.  But I love doing the work outs together! I really had to beg convince Cory to exercise with me, but we have been pretty good, for 2 days. And we will finish it, even if it takes longer than 60 days, which I'm sure it will with it being summer and all. If any of my siblings or Cory's siblings would like to come over and work out with us when you're in town you are welcome to!! Tara and Paul are staying at our house so we might make them ;)

-Another thing, my friend Nicole posted about sea salt spray on instagram, so I asked her where she got it and then got some for myself, and that stuff is awesome!! It adds nice texture to your hair.

-Cory is blessing Adalyn this Sunday and I am so excited to see her in her blessing dress!

Adalyn: 1 month old!

I can't believe Adalyn is already one month old! Really, it kills me. This past month has gone by SO fast ,but sometimes the days were unbelievably slow. I am finally starting to feel normal and feel like I can handle everything. The first week she was home I couldn't imagine doing anything else but take care of her. Luckily, my mom helped me keep up the house. I think I cried everyday the first 2 weeks over happy and sad things, but fortunately I am over that too! Adalyn has gotten so big it  makes me sad, the first time I put her in 0-3 size clothing I might have cried a little bit. She weights about 10 lbs and I'm not sure how long she is, I will know at her 2 month appointment.

Adalyn is a very sweet baby most of the time and we are lucky she is ours!

Things Adalyn does:
-She makes all sorts of noises, snorts, burps when she is awake and asleep
-Stares at your face while you're feeding her.
-Stares at a lot of things, will make eye contact for a minute or longer
-She can lift up her head and move it side to side while she is on her belly
-She sneezes and gets the hiccups alot
-Flails her limbs in the air and scares herself
-Goes potty right when her diaper comes off
-Sometimes sounds like Darth Vader when she breaths
-Sometimes cries for a short loud second in the middle of eating (I think she gets gas)
-She is a noisy eater
-So, so wiggly
-SHE SMILED at 5 weeks. I have been waiting for that for my whole life it feels like.
-just switched from newborn size clothes and diapers to 0-3 clothing and size 1 diapers.
-At 5 weeks she started sleeping 4-5 and sometimes 6 hour stretches at night.

Things Adalyn likes:
-Loves taking baths
-Staring at the mobile above her swing
-Falling asleep in anyone's arms
-Being swaddled, only when she is tired
-Being in her carseat
-Eating
-Laying on your shoulder, after being burped.
-Being talked or sung to
-Looking out the window in our bedroom

Things Adalyn doesn't like:
-A too slow diaper change
-Having her clothes changed, does not like things to be put on over her head
-staying in one place for too long, likes to have different views
-Getting too wiggly, she doesn't know how to stop moving I'm pretty sure.
-Having gas and I don't think she enjoys going #2 very much.

Here are some pictures from her first month of life!

Adalyn Jo: A Birth Story

Please love the title of this blog post (TLC anyone?)

Our sweet baby finally came! I want to write down the story before I forget the details. I will spare everyone of anything gross (maybe) we"ll see.

On May 13 (38 weeks, 6 days) I was laying in bed at 10 am, since I had stopped work the Thursday before I had no reason to get up, and I didn't want to. Anyways I am laying there and all the sudden I felt a big gush of something. I thought, "Did I SERIOUSLY just pee my pants?" So I went to the bathroom and when I stood up I was sure my water had borken. I was in shock! Usually your water has to be broken during labor! This is just like the movies!

I called Cory, luckily right when his class got out and said, "Cory I think my water broke." And he said, "haha really? Call the doctor!" So I called the doctor and they wanted me to come in right then, they wouldn't even let me wait for Cory to drive the 30 min back home.  So I drove myself to the doctor and had to wait in the waiting room because they didn't have a room open for me yet.

When my nurse, Leslie brought me back she said, "You probably just peed your pants, it's a lot more common than you'd think!" I was thinking 'yeah right I have NEVER peed for 15 minutes straight' but I just said, "yeah, maybe!" My doctor came in and they have a test strip that detects amniotic fluid, but he didn't really have to use it because.. well you know he could tell that it was not urine. He told me he was calling the hospital to let them know I was coming and I needed to go right then. Again, I asked if I could wait for Cory to get home and he told me I could.

Cory got home 5 minutes after me, and I was ready to go, luckily I had all the bags packed with everything we needed.  We drove to the hospital, checked in and then waited in the waiting room so I could have a room with a window.

By this time it was 11 am. I was impressed with how fast everything got started. I got in my gown and got my IV in by 11:30 and they started monitoring my contractions, which I was having but couldn't really feel. Since my water broke first, my doctor wanted to really make sure the baby was okay so he wanted to use an internal monitor, which hooks into the baby's head. So.. I got my epidural at 3 cm, around 1 pm, I wanted an epidural, I am no heroine. Getting an epidural really isn't bad. It kind of feels like when you hit your funny bone, but down your spine for a minute, but after that it is good.

That epidural lasted for about 8 hours, then I started to feel everything on my right side. I shifted so gravity would help numb my right side, but it didn't work! I was really starting to feel everything on the right, I was 4 cm when I started feeling everything. It didn't bother me too bad to feel it on one side. The anesthesiologist came in when I was 6 cm and wanted to try to do another epidural. So, I got my second one and it worked for about 3 hours and then I started feeling it in my back!! I had heard terrible things about back labor and at this point I started to get scared. After an hour of back labor I started feeling everything in my front. Then my catheter was not emptying so I felt like I needed to use the restroom! I could feel it every time they checked me (which I hate). At one point I just lost it, I could feel everything, I was no longer numb ANYWHERE. Cory tried helping me but I just needed him to tell me I was doing a good job. He did help me realize though, that I had to pull it together, and I could do it!! So I just kept telling myself 'I can do this, I can do this'  At 3 am I got a new nurse, her name was Catherine and she was a gift from Heavenly Father, she was so encouraging and she would breathe with me and she was just so amazing.

At 8 cm my anesthesiologist came back and wanted to try a third epidural. This was around 4 am. It is so hard to sit still through a contraction while you're getting an epidural. So hard. By this point, I wanted to push more than anything. The contractions were about 1 minute apart and lasted for 1 minute. I thought I could bear the 15- 30 minutes more of contractions before the third epidural would kick in.

Well, the third epidural never kicked in.  I felt everything! It was incredibly painful. I never knew to what degree I would want to push. I would have given my left leg if I could have pushed when I wanted to. I was at 9 cm and needed to thin out a little bit more. Catherine went and called my doctor, came back in and checked me and told me I could start pushing. I was SO HAPPY. then they started setting up the room for delivery, and turned on 2 huge spotlights. With every contraction I bore down and pushed until I thought I would pass out, and I had dry mouth so Cory was ready with the ice chips. After 6 minutes of pushing my Dr came in and kept encouraging me, which was so helpful. Cory was back and forth between me and the end of the bed. He kept saying things like "I can see her head!!" and "Good job!" and "Get mad Hayley, get mad!!" So I did get mad and after them telling me it usually takes 2-3 hours of pushing for a first time mother, I had her out in 16 minutes!!

It was the most surreal moment of my life. I really felt like I was in a dream. There was this baby covered in cream cheese on my stomach and all I could do was hold her and gasp for air, but I didn't cry! I think I was really dehydrated.  I will never ever forget that moment, it is one of those ones that will be etched into my mind forever.

After I nursed her (which she just latched right on! What a champ!) Cory helped give her a bath while I watched. Then family came and congratulated us.

I can honestly say that I have no idea how I got through 19 hours of labor. I know that I didn't do it by myself, and that every prayer during every single contraction was answered and I was able to do the hardest thing I have ever done and ever will do, physically.

I ended up losing a lot of blood and I had to get a shot in my leg and I almost passed out! Which is weird, I have never even come close to passing out. I am still anemic and I am on iron supplements, but other than that my recovery has been so awesome and it is really great to have my body back, even if it looks way different than before.

We are so so grateful to have our sweet Adalyn here with us. She is such a sweet, content baby and we could not love her more!.

Adalyn Jo- Born at 5:02 am on 5/14/2013 7lbs 14 oz, 20 in

We think she is pretty cute!

Weeks 36-39

Week 36 was the week that kids started asking their parents in stores if I was having a baby. Or people would comment on me getting peach rings in the bulk section (Oh are you craving those today? Stupid byu i students!). I have been feeling really good still. I really don't think I realize how big I am until I see pictures.

Cravings/aversions: same as my last post! Watermelon YUM. And peach rings too, I guess

Baby is still moving alot!! My Dr checked me at 37 weeks and I was 1 cm dilated barely. Speaking of being checked, no one told me about that. It hurts like the devil and I hate it. I am afraid to be checked again. Really scared.  I am still working as a dental assistant, which is really interesting with a huge belly! I am going to stop at the end of my 38th week.
36 weeks

38 weeks

39 weeks! She will be here soon!!!!

Weeks 31 - 35

Well, at this point in my pregnancy I was just going along... trying to make it to the end. I felt myself getting bigger everyday!. I went to the bathroom atleast 3 times per night.

Cravings/Aversions: Watermelon, oh man, I would eat a whole big watermelon in 2 days by myself! I love trailmix. Kind of sick of granola bars, chicken is nasty.

Baby: Baby is moving A LOT. she loves to shove her head into my pelvic floor and it feels awesome (not). It stops me in my tracks, actually.  By week 35 I dropped pretty low.

We are just preparing for baby to come! We bought a dresser, and a rug and curtains. It is crazy how much those three things can make a room look good! We are anxiously awaiting our little girls arrival!

I also had both family showers, which were really fun. I didn't post pictures from those, maybe I will later. Oh, I also chopped off my hair.
